Focus on the Color

by Charlotte Frick

Focus on the color.
The green of his eyes;
Not bright,
Not dark,
Somewhere in the middle.
The color that makes you
Feel safe.

Focus on the color.
The pale blue of your favorite blanket;
It has led you through the
Darkest of nightmares.
It lets you see the light.

Focus on the color.
The bright pink of your sister’s room;
The place she retreats to
for hours on end.
The place she never lets you
see.

Focus on the color.
The yellow of lemonade;
The kind you would sell for
25 cents when your parents
had a garage sale.
The one that was sickly sweet,
that you would drink until you thought your teeth
would fall out.

Focus on the color.
The orange of the sunset;
So many that you have seen.
The best ones usually come after
long summer days.
Days spent at the beach
with friends.
The days you love most.

Focus on the color.
The black of the night sky;
interrupted only by stars.
As the summer drags on,
it becomes the canvas for bright fireworks.
Every week like clock work,
9:30 pm.
You pile into the car with your family
go to the same spot,
and watch the boats go by
under the dark night sky.
